The world of entertainment has produced a barrage of videos, films and music that would suggest that the average individual’s insatiable appetite is for things of the flesh. The industry strives to satisfy a void by providing more of the same, sex, violence, greed and sin in every form, pushing the boundaries further until Christians find it virtually impossible to go to or take their children to the movies. But, oh how refreshing it is to have two blockbuster hits that are Christian based movies in theaters in last few months, with more on the horizon.
War Room and Woodlawn are the two films that have changed the tide for movie goers, giving us options that can teach and strengthen the moral fiber of our nation. I have had the privilege of viewing both of these phenomenal movies and can honestly say that they are well produced, directed and cast. Both films have mystery (the mystery of faith), murder (death to the sinful nature of prejudice and adultery), and excitement (both films had sports competition).
Morgan Paddock is co-founder with her husband Glenn of The Dream Campaign in Savannah. “I am continually encouraged to see Christian movies offered right alongside mainstream movies. The fact that War Room was a high grossing movie goes to show that the issues plaguing our world and the need for prayer is important. . .Woodlawn was an incredible movie which showed how issues of racism can be handled as well as perseverance in Christ. These are issues that too many of our youth sadly still face today but it opened up the conversation in a healthy way. For such a time as this the world is listening and I pray that movies such as these continue to be made to address our need for God.”
Several of my church members also saw the film War Room and sang its praises. A member decided to start a Bible study group based on the teachings of the power of prayer as in the War Room. YouTube is becoming flooded with sporting events that show the public display of prayer and praising God from the players and marching bands music choices.
It appears that the true void is finally being filled. More Christian and faith-based films, music and videos that feed the spiritual appetite is a welcomed change in the oldest city in our nation, the City of Savannah. Stay tuned for God’s Not Dead 2 and The Letters, the story of Mother Teresa coming soon to a theater near you.
